La Nuit espagnole

Exhibitions / Miscellaneous

From 5 July to 31 August 2008
Parisians and visitors, there’s no need to travel out of the capital this summer to get a dose of Hispanic culture. Throughout the whole of July and August, the Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris will be revealing the world of flamenco, the emblem of Andalusian culture. Flamenco, a legendary popular art, fascinated famous artists such as Picasso, Courbet, Miro, Degas and Man Ray and is the focus of this exhibition, entitled “Nuit Espagnole”.

“Nuit Espagnole” brings together over 150 works (paintings, sculptures, costumes, photographs, etc.) which focus on the mutual influences and associations between flamenco and avant-garde paintings by artists during the period 1865 to 1936.

Let yourself be tempted by this charming journey to Andalusia.

Description :

In the heat of the Parisian sun, leave for Spain…at the Petit Palais…thanks to the exhibition focusing on Flamenco, avant-garde and popular culture, from 1865 to1939. Composed essentially of the Spanish cultural identity, Flamenco, a dance both sensual and mysterious, captivated the excitement of several generations of painters and sculptors and inspired them in their quest for modernity. The years 1850 to 1939 demonstrate this notably in the works of Courbet, Manet, Degas, Sorolla, Picasso, Delaunay, Gargallo, Lipchitz…
